   When I was a kid, my father purchased a space age LED watch at our local mall for something like 50 bucks, and we could only touch it at night after we brushed our teeth and got into bed without excessive nagging. Fast forward 45 years and nearly everything that glows is LED, though what the LED is glowing IN makes the difference. While I am not a materials expert (that I know of) I have purchased more than an average number of deck and dock lights (both solar and wired) in an attempt to find a product that looked great, worked well, and wasn’t that expensive. I haven’t found that product (yet), so every light purchase for me is a compromise of sorts. The LEDs in solar lights have become very dependable, and the low power usage allows for hours of light before fading. The weak spot appears to be the solar panels, which tend to weaken and fail within a year or so. In my experience they don’t like the Houston sun and heat at all, so I tend to bring them in or cover them during periods with really high temps. Another major difference that affects the price is style and material. I prefer the mid-century modern/retro look and the cheap look of the micro-thin stamped bodies of other products is a turnoff. These lights (while having plastic bodies) are lower profile and look nicer on a post during the day than other lights in their class. They work well at night, though not as bright as their wired cousins, and they are a whole lot easier use. I spend a couple of hours screwing around in an attempt to make a base the light to make it portable. I am no woodworker, but I came up with one idea that might be useful eating outside in the evening.

   Got these not to attach to the tops of deck posts but simply to place strategically in my front garden or around my back patio. They look nice and have a switch that turns on/off and toggles between yellow and bright white light. The instructions “say” the switch will change the light color from red, green, blue, yellow, white however, that isn’t the case. They do glow for a decent amount of time which is nice although not all night. If you’re looking for a set of lights to provide a soothing setting on your deck, these will certainly fit the bill.

   This set of lights was very easy to install. I do suggest always drilling pilot holes to avoid potentially stripping screws. Because the frame is secured separately to the post, it’s easy to remove the cap to switch between warm and cool light options as desired or to replace the included AA battery. For the first use my set received 8+ hours of sunlight and they were very bright when it got dark. Looking forward to them lighting up my fenceline for many nights to come.

   These are simple solar lights that add to the ambience of the deck. You can choose whether you want warmer or cooler lights. If you screw them down so they don’t wobble, you will need to remove a screw or two to get to the switch if you want want to change the temperature or the light or turn it off. That’s a bit of a hassle some other lights don’t have and why there are four stars instead of five.

   The lights are not particularly bright but I don’t feel that’s a problem. In my opinion a deck railing is not the place for bright lights but just a little atmosphere and enough brightness to find your way without stumbling. This lights tend to shine straight down so they show you the railing, the post they’re on and maybe just a little bit of the footing which is what was wanted.

   I bought these to put on the posts for the steps. They looked great. I attached pictures of them taken at 3 AM, about 7 hours after sunset. In one of the photos you can see the difference between the 3000k and 6000k light settings.There was enough light to easily see the steps.

   Unfortunately, there was a problem. When someone went up the steps, they quite often put their hands on the post light. We will use them when we install third hand wrought iron fence. They will look just as great on the fence posts as they did on the step posts. Maybe even better. Afterall, they were made to be used on fence posts.

   5 stars for solar lights that actually burn deep into the night.

   These solar post lights are well-designed and easy to install, and having six in a pack is great for covering a larger area. The warm and cool white options are a nice touch, and they do add some ambient glow to the yard. That said, the brightness is a bit lower than expected — better suited for decorative use rather than strong illumination. Still a solid value for accent lighting around fences and decks.
